During the warmer months, CAT Officers can be
seen patrolling the downtown district on bicycles, which enhances
citizen contact and interaction and provides greater mobility in
areas not readily accessible by patrol vehicles. Citizens are more
apt to approach an Officer on a bicycle for assistance rather than
attempt to flag down a passing patrol vehicle. The versatility of
the bike patrol allows the Officer to arrive on the scene of a crime
in progress, virtually undetected, improving the chances of
apprehending involved individuals. Currently, 3 CAT Unit Officers
comprise the bicycle patrol unit.
Several times throughout the year, the CAT Unit and the Rahway
Police Special Investigations Unit collaborate and coordinate
“Quality of Life” sweeps in the downtown district. Quality of Life
issues that are targeted include, but are not limited to, drinking
in public, criminal mischief, littering, urinating in public,
panhandling and disorderly conduct. These sweeps are greatly
supported by the downtown community and have been very successful in
eliminating and deterring these issues.
The CAT Unit continues to broaden its responsibilities by
elaborating on existing programs, implementing new programs, and
maintaining partnerships with various community organizations. The
CAT Unit is pleased to provide the following services to our
community:
